A Tourist in Isabela

I woke up that day feeling really excited that I was going to finally see the beautiful town of Isabela. Especially since I was staying in the “Villas del Mar” which is basically a cabin in front of the beach. The most amazing thing was that the beach was literary walking distance. I got dressed like your typically tourist and what’s that? Well, clothes with bright colors, a camera in my hand and a little bit of sunblock in my nose. My family and I arrived and got amazed by the beautiful view of this town. Notice how I’m using a lot adjectives because that’s basically how every tourist talks. ‘Oh look at the pretty dog and what a nice view, let me show my friends at Facebook”. I know this because I’m guilty of talking like this whenever I visit a new place. Basically everyone is guilty of this because is hard not to get fascinated with new things.

The second day in Isabela we, obviously, went to the beach and spent all day there.   I got really tanned and ate a lot of puertorrican food like empanadillas, mofongo, alcapurria and whole lot others. I’ve noticed that there were a lot of real tourists, especially from the United States, and got extremely proud that they were staying in a local place instead of going to a five-star hotel. That night, my family got the opportunity to speak to a few of tourists and I saw the excitement of visiting and seeing all the “beautiful things that Puerto Rico got to offer” (I quote from them). This got to me because I don’t get excited by anything from my home but it was refreshing to see them feeling like that.

On the last day, we went to a beautiful ,I say this because it really was, local family restaurant called “Don Jando”. From the moment that we arrived, they treated us like we were part of their family. I got so in love with this place that I immediately started taking pictures of everything. I ordered my plate in English but they knew that I was from here because of my accent. Nevertheless, they continued to treat me very kindly. I got the vibe that they treated everyone very kindly. I really learned a lot from my weekend as a tourist and I hope to continue with this project as a way to see things from a different perspective.

So for this comic, I drew all of my favorite moments that I spend as a tourist in Isabela. I put a lot of colors so that the viewers could see how full of colors is Isabela. I'm not a very good drawer but I hope that what you can interprete from this is: if you see things from a different perspective, you'll learn new things.

  1. As I read about your day as a tourist, the pictures of the diferent types of food you mentioned popped up in my head. I kept imagining what the local restaurant looked liked but I guess it was really beautiful by the way you described it. So glad you were able to get a different perspective! I loved it!!!!
